Cashew nuts ?
Cashew nuts are nutritionally much the same as other nuts: they are high in fat (around 50%), rich in vitamin E and a good source of minerals, particularly magnesium and zinc. Cashew nuts in raw condition are a satisfying and nutritious snack. These nuts are high in protein, fiber and healthy fats. We love adding these tasty raw cashews to rice dishes and curries for an extra bite of protein and flavor. They are unsalted, huge and delicious for snacking or cooking.
4 valuable health benefits of cashew nuts
1) Heart Health: The fat content found in cashews is predominantly heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. This type of “good” fat can reduce LDL cholesterol levels when it is used to replace saturated fat in the diet.
2) Antioxidant Defense: Cashews are also chock-full of powerful antioxidants, which could play an important role in their heart-protective benefits. They are an especially rich source of the fat-soluble antioxidant Vitamin E, which can protect your body against toxins.
3) Aids Weight Loss: Making nuts a regular part of your diet can also fend off weight gain. Studies suggest that frequent nut consumption is associated with a reduced risk for weight gain. Swap out processed snacks for a handful of nuts the next time hunger strikes.
4) Good Source of Minerals: Cashews are a plentiful source of minerals like iron, magnesium and phosphorus. They also contain small amounts of zinc, potassium and selenium. A serving of cashews can help you get more essential minerals in your diet.
Which steps are included in cashew processing?
Cashews are actually seeds that grow at the base of cashew apples.
In the shell of the cashew is an oil known as Cashew Nutshell Liquid (CNSL), which contains the highly irritant and toxic anacardic acid which can cause blisters, rashes and burning sensations. People who work in cashew facilities quite often end up with allergies because of the amount of CNSL they come into contact with in the course of their jobs.
The cashew nuts kernel comes in a very hard shell that cannot be cracked by hand so to soften the shell for removal, and to remove the irritant oil, cashews in their shells are boiled or steamed and then dried. They are then cracked one at a time (highly labour intensive) using a mechanical hand cracker to ensure the cashew kernel remains intact.
Finally, the testa or skin of the raw cashew is removed leaving the creamy white nut we are all familiar with. When dry or oil roasted, the cashew turns a golden yellow color. It’s also possible to buy dry roasted cashews with the skin still on. Agrikim hopefully ensures the customer with our best cashew nuts.
